Who We Are - Attorney Ilonka Aylward
 
     In a quest to offer high-quality legal counsel without the impersonality of large-firm representation, Ilonka Aylward started AFL in 2004.  She had previously practiced with large, nationally-prominent law firms in New York and Charlotte.
    Ilonka received her legal education (Juris Doctor degree) at the University of Virginia, where her law school distinctions included selection to the Law Review and award of the Olin Prize at graduation.
   She also received a Ph.D. and a Master's degree from the University of Chicago. Her doctoral dissertation at Chicago involved the philosophy of criminal law.
     Aylward is admitted to the Bars of North Carolina and New York.  She is active with the local county bar, delivering lectures on a variety of subjects—from ethics to complex evidentiary issues.
   Her practice at Aylward Family Law includes out-of-court counseling, trial work, and appellate advocacy to higher courts.
   Dr. Aylward speaks Russian fluently, French "pretty badly," and changes the subject embarrassedly when her one-time study of Japanese is mentioned.
